Bentley Survey Shows Customers Care About Security -– But Don’t Know How to Implement It

In June 2004, Bentley College conducted a survey of almost 3,000 home Internet users regarding their thoughts on data security. The results show that while most users are concerned about data security and safeguarding their computers against being involved in virus attacks, many aren’t familiar with basic data-security strategies. FTC Seeks Comment on Proposed COPPA Rule Amendment

The Federal Trade Commission is seeking public comment on a proposal to amend the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Rule. The amendment would make permanent a temporary provision in the rule that allows operators of Web sites and online services that collect personal information from children only for internal use to obtain verifiable parental consent via email. The FTC’s Consumer Information Security Web site contains a wealth of resources and tip sheets for consumers and consumer-facing business on information privacy and security. In the “Consumer Information” section of the site, for example, visitors can download tips on safeguarding their computers against spyware, avoiding the hidden dangers of file-sharing programs, and reducing the amount of spam they receive.
