Last month, the Better Business Bureau announced that it will be rolling its BBBOnLine Privacy seal program into its BBBOnLine Reliability seal program, thus shifting its focus away from validation and certification of privacy practices to general business practices. Identity Issues Dissected in Jim Harper Book

With biometrics, identity management, and similar concepts taking center stage in the privacy discussion, it's more important than ever to get a handle on identity issues. Advances in identification technology - machine biometrics, identity cards, surveillance, personal-information databases - can threaten privacy and civil liberties, enable identity fraud, and subject people to unwanted surveillance. Tip: Response Planning for a Data Breach

Having a data breach response plan in place is an important element to your security and privacy practices. Plan ahead to avoid potential breach crises from occurring. Two main components to consider when developing your plan:

  1. Incident Response Plan
    1. Establish an incident response team.
    2. Develop a process for reporting and escalating incidents.
    3. Establish a periodic and post-incident review and re-testing process.
  1. Breach Notice Processes
    1. Decide whether a breach notice is either legally mandatory or otherwise appropriate.
    2. Determine who to notify, specifically those directly affected by the breach.
    3. Establish a process for communicating a breach notice.
    4. Prepare all involved departments internally.
    5. Prepare the content of the breach notice communication.
