INTERNATIONAL PRIVACY COMMUNITY TO CONVERGE ON BAY AREA FOR FIRST ANNUAL PRIVACY WEEK

More Than 600 Privacy Professionals Will Gather in San Francisco for Series of Events Dedicated to Personal and Corporate Privacy Issues

San Francisco – April 26, 2004 – The international privacy community, including representatives from more than 12 nations, will gather in San Francisco on June 7-11, 2004 for Privacy Week, a series of conferences addressing critical privacy issues including spam , regulatory compliance, Internet security, identity management, and corporate brand protection. The weeklong series of events constitutes the largest gathering of privacy professionals in the U.S. in 2004.

Highlighting the week is Privacy Futures, a three-day symposium organized by privacy non-profits TRUSTe and the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) and sponsored by Microsoft Corporation. Privacy Futures will draw more than 500 privacy experts to the Bay Area, illustrating the growing significance of the privacy profession and the critical role of privacy in today's business environment.

Also scheduled during Privacy Week is the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Privacy Sub-Group Meeting hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Privacy delegates from eleven member nations including China , Korea , Japan , Australia and New Zealand will gather to continue work on privacy issues affecting Pacific Rim countries.

Additionally, the Conference Board's Council of Chief Privacy Officers, representing more than thirty of the largest U.S. companies, will meet to discuss key privacy issues affecting today's corporate environment.

"Led by Privacy Futures, the stature of the attendees and extent of the privacy issues covered in June will be unprecedented," said Fran Maier , president and executive director of TRUSTe. "The timing and scope of these events reflects the elevated status that privacy protection now commands in every aspect of our lives. This first annual Privacy Week will take dead aim at issues that have a profound impact on future government policy, personal rights and business continuity."

"Privacy is front-and-center as a business issue today, affecting nearly every aspect of trade, with international implications involving the flow of data between borders," said Trevor Hughes, executive director, IAPP. "The prominence of the privacy profession will only continue to grow as technologies evolve and global economic interaction becomes more commonplace, which is why the Privacy Futures conference has been embraced as an essential event both within and outside the privacy industry."

Included in the Privacy Futures agenda is a California Legislator Panel that offers California state senators and assembly members engaging in a spirited discussion about the impact of privacy on outsourcing, healthcare and e-mail spam . Keynotes at Privacy Futures include Howard Beales, Director, Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission, and chief privacy executives from IBM, Intel, Hewlett Packard and Sun Microsystems. The event will also feature addresses by leading futurists: Thornton May, Futurist for the World Bank; John Patrick, former VP of Internet Strategy for IBM; and Bob Johannsen, from the Institute for the Study of the Future.
