NFL JOINS TRUSTe PRIVACY SEAL PROGRAM WITH 28 AFFILIATED WEBSITES CERTIFIED IN ADVANCE OF 2006 SEASON

Newly-certified NFL sites carrying the TRUSTe Privacy Seal include NFL.com, Superbowl.com, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Web site and 25 individual NFL team Web sites

(New York, N.Y. and San Francisco, Calif.)– August 7, 2006 – The NFL today announced that 28 affiliated Web sites have been certified to display the TRUSTe Privacy Seal, demonstrating the league’s commitment to consumer privacy and trust online. With the start of the 2006 NFL pre-season in August and the popularity of NFL fantasy football generating increased traffic to NFL Web sites, visitors can be confident that TRUSTe-certified sites will provide notice and choice regarding use of their personal information.

Newly-certified NFL sites include NFL.com, Superbowl.com, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Web site and 25 individual NFL team Web sites. TRUSTe, the leading privacy certification and seal program, awards its privacy seal only to companies that complete the rigorous TRUSTe certification process. To earn TRUSTe certification, NFL Web sites agree to comply with ongoing oversight and TRUSTe’s consumer dispute resolution process.

“TRUSTe certification serves as a benchmark in our ongoing commitment to safeguard consumer privacy and security,” said David Proper, the NFL’s senior counsel. “As a qualified third party, TRUSTe effectively ensured the integrity and consistency of privacy policies and practices across our sites.”

The TRUSTe Privacy Seal is one of the most recognized branded symbols of online trust among consumers. The TRUSTe Privacy Seal communicates that a Web site has posted a privacy statement and that its information gathering and dissemination practices follow guidelines for notice, choice, access, security and redress outlined in the Federal Trade Commission’s Fair Information Practices. Specifically, TRUSTe sealholders, agree to:

  • Disclose their information gathering and dissemination practices
  • Give consumers choice to limit any secondary uses of their personal information through opt-in or opt-out
  • Provide consumers with access to their personal information to correct any inaccuracies
  • Ensure that reasonable security mechanisms are being used to protect the data that is collected

“By becoming a TRUSTe sealholder, the NFL gives its fans clear signal that it is trustworthy and respects the privacy wishes of the people who visit NFL Web sites,” said Fran Maier, executive director and president of TRUSTe. “The NFL joins more than 2,000 organizations committed to building consumer trust online through participation in the TRUSTe Privacy Seal program.”

Ongoing monitoring and the Watchdog Consumer Dispute Resolution mechanism are cornerstones of the TRUSTe Privacy Seal and Certification Program. Through Watchfire monitoring, TRUSTe systematically monitors the practices of seal program participants to ensure ongoing compliance with posted privacy statements. In addition, TRUSTe provides consumers and organizations an effective, easy-to-use method to resolve privacy disputes through its online Watchdog Dispute Resolution service.
